California names show the diversity of the state's many immigrant communities. Many Armenian, Hindi, Nahuatl, Hmong, and Japanese names appear in California's list, but are unknown in most other states. California's large Spanish-speaking population also influences the state's naming style, propelling names like Camila and Angel into the top-25.

Californians tend not to like the modern -ee and -ey names for girls. Names like Kynlee, Bryleigh, Paislee, Tenley, and Brynlee are much less popular in the Golden State than elsewhere. For boys, Californians are not overly fond of modern names beginning with B: Brantley, Benton, Braxton, Braylen, Briggs, and Branson are among the most under-used names in the state.

The 10 girls' names most disproportionately popular in California are:

The 10 boys' names most disproportionately popular in California are:

Note: Many of the most disproportionately popular names in California are Armenian in origin. Many Armenian Americans live in New York and Massachusetts, but the Armenian community in California is the largest in the US — large enough for traditional Armenian names to surpass the threshold of 5+ names needed to appear in the data. Since these names are extremely rare outside of the Armenian American community, their disproportionate popularity in California is extreme.
